BuildingGreen’s Top 10 Products for 2020
For the past 18 years, BuildingGreen has recognized green building products that significantly improve upon standard industry practices. This year, the focus was on reducing the environmental impacts of greenhouse gases. The following products do so by conserving energy, reducing emissions, and managing carbon impacts.
USG Sheetrock Brand EcoSmart Panels
This drop-in replacement tops our list as most groundbreaking. As a substitute for Type X drywall, it weighs 22% less, it uses 25% less water in its manufacture, it produces 20% less CO2 during manufacture and, emits less exhaust from the truck when hauling to the jobsite (because it is lighter).
CalPlant is using a local agricultural fiber (rice straw), whose disposal typically wastes water and generates greenhouse gases, to create a formaldehyde -free MDF with superior performance over similar wood-based products. These low-carbon, low-emitting panels are better for the environment, have better performance, and coule be a game changer in the interior panel industry.
Duracryl International Corques Liquid Lino
Linoleum is made of completely natural materials: linseed oil, wood flour, vegetable oils and cork, so it is already a wonderful flooring option. However, traditionally it was made by pushing the stuff through hot rollers in long kilns that take a lot of energy to run, and then was shipped from Europe to North America. Now, it is being delivered in a bucket and installed by pouring it out and letting it cure overnight.
